When I first found out I was going to have a baby with Down syndrome at 11 weeks pregnant, I was overwhelmed with fear and uncertainty. I wanted to know how other parents in my situation navigated this journey. So, I turned to Google and searched for "doctors with children with Down syndrome." The name that came up was Dr. Raquel Nieves from Stanford University, and I decided to reach out to her.

When I shared my story and explained why I was calling her from across the country, Dr. Nieves responded with such warmth and kindness. "Congratulations! This is the best gift you could ever receive, and I'm so excited for you," she said. Despite my own fears, she immediately helped me see the incredible blessing my child would be for me and my family. In that moment, I felt a sense of peace wash over me—God knew exactly what I needed to hear.

Raquel generously shared her experience with her daughter, Anna, and something she said has stayed with me ever since. She shared that she had prayed for everything about Anna's health, except for one thing: her anus. And, as fate would have it, Anna was born with an imperforate anus. It reminded me that I needed to pray with purpose and intention, and so I began praying for every part of my baby—every organ, from his head down to his toes—and yes, even for his anus!

When Lorenzo was born at 35 weeks and spent 10 days in the NICU, my fears melted away the moment I laid eyes on him. I could see that he was fearfully and wonderfully made. I truly believe that God chose Raquel to guide me through this journey, and I will forever be grateful for her support.

A couple of years ago, we had the chance to meet in Florida, and Lorenzo and Anna were able to play together. That connection, that bond, is something I will treasure forever. Raquel has been such an invaluable resource for me, offering wisdom and advice with so much compassion and understanding. She truly knows what it’s like to walk this path, and I don’t hesitate to reach out to her whenever I need guidance.

Today, Lorenzo is 3 years old and thriving in a typical school, learning alongside his peers. We’re not afraid of the diagnosis anymore—he is capable, and as his parents, we are committed to giving him all the tools he needs to succeed. I'm so thankful to have had Raquel as a guide, someone who has been there before me, showing me the way through new stages of our lives.

Thank you, Raquel, for being part of our story. You’ve made all the difference.

When I met Dr. Nieves, my son Luke with Down Syndrom was only 18 months old. I was still trying to figure out all the best things for him medically, socially, therapists, you name it. Dr. Nieves not only answered all my questions but eased all my worries. She was a North Star for me, she pointed me into the right direction and painted a map of where to go next. Fast forward, my son is 4 and thriving!

Dr. Nieves is the unicorn; she has with a wealth of knowledge and knows first hand what it is like to be in your shoes. In addition, she has an incredible medical and military background which gives her this amazing passionate side without leaving any of her compassionate and kind side out. If you are looking for an outstanding doctor and human then look no further!
